Rustic Canyon Family News
PEAK PRODUCE AND HAPPY EATING WITH THE RC FAMILY
Happy Fall everyone. It’s that magical time of year at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, where we still get to enjoy the lingering deliciousness of late Summer produce, like heirloom tomatoes, while getting to dive into Fall’s special crop of squash, pears, sunchokes and leafy greens.
You can currently enjoy these ingredients throughout our restaurants and ice cream shops, from Rustic Canyon’s Braised Thao Farms Swiss Chard on Grilled Bread with Pancetta and Chile Oil, to Milo & Olive’s Roasted Butternut Squash Pizza with Caramelized Onion, Fontina Cream, Thyme and Aged Balsamic. There’s Grilled Kabocha Squash with Lemongrass Curry, Asian Basil, Feta and Applewood Smoked Bacon at Cassia, and the return of the much-loved Spiced Pumpkin Ice Cream at Sweet Rose. And don’t forget to grab a Pear & Blackberry Crostata at Huckleberry, Amberjack Crudo with late season Nectarines, Windrose Farms Agretti and Wasabi Oil at Esters, and the remarkable Thao Farms Sweet Potatoes stuffed with Black Rice, Domingo Rojo Beans, Charred Salsa and Jack Cheese at Tallula’s.
Needless to say there’s a lot of good eating to be done this Fall at our restaurants.
GOOD TIMES AT TALLULA'S
It’s hard to believe, but our newest restaurant baby, Tallula’s, is rapidly approach its 6-month mark. The food continues to get better each day under the supervision of Chef Jeremy Fox and his talented kitchen. For those of you who haven’t been yet, Tallula’s is Mexican-inspired food using the absolutely best ingredients you can find anywhere, including organic dairy and poultry, grass-fed sustainable beef, farmers’ market produce and heirloom organic masa for our handmade tortillas.
Current menu favorites include Nachos with Spicy Giardiniera and Buttermilk Crema, a Pasilla Chile & Oaxaca Cheese Tamale with White Mole, Toasted Almonds & Habañero Pepper and a Mexican Shrimp Scampi with Sunchokes, Fried Masa, and Cascabel Garlic Butter. At Tallula’s we also pride ourselves on serving lighter, but robustly flavorful dishes that leave you feeling good after you eat, like Pan Roasted Branzino with Kalamata Olives and Citrus Mojo Sauce and a Roasted Organic Chicken with Fig Mole, Fingerling Potatoes and Housemade Flour Tortillas. Tallula’s food is best shared with a loved one or group of friends with Margaritas in hand, so come join the party.
In addition, after much request, we recently rolled out a Happy Hour in the bar Monday-Friday from 4-6. Our Happy Hour menu is available on our websitehere and includes a special taco selection like Organic Chicken with Salsa Verde, Grass Fed Ground Beef with Chile de Arbol Salsa, and Veggies with Organic Beans, Avocado and Pico de Gallo.

THE EASY WAY TO GET RC FAMILY FOOD (AND WINE!) IN YOUR HOME
As many of you know there’s a revolution taking place in take-out and delivery food due to the emergence of app-based ordering. It’s become so much easier to order food to your house via popular apps such as Postmates, Caviar, Uber Eats, Doordash and ChowNow. While we certainly don’t think ordering take-out replaces the joy of eating food in a restaurant, we all know there are lots of times when we can’t or don’t want to leave our homes or cook, and at times like these, delivery and online ordering apps are a great way to get our food and wine into your homes.
You might have already ordered pizzas and pastas from Milo & Olive or weekend brunch and sandwiches from Huckleberry. But did you know that you can now get Bryant’s wickedly spicy Organic Chicken Wings delivered to your house from Cassia, or those aforementioned Nachos or Turkey Enchiladas from Tallula’s? Or that you can satisfy your craving for an impromptu pint of ice cream or large size sundae pack from Sweet Rose through the apps? And maybe best of all, you can get sommelier selected bottles of wine from Esters, along with cheese and charcuterie, delivered to your door—many times in less than 45 minutes. Rustic Canyon is last to join the delivery platform, Jeremy’s food from Rustic will be online soon as well with a take-out curated menu. On a personal level, as parents of young kids, we’re big fans of all of the options that the delivery apps now make available to us.
BRUNCH AND BURGERS AT ESTERS, AND HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS FROM ESTERS AND SWEET ROSE
We’re constantly thinking about how to make our existing restaurants better and to offer things we’re proud of to our prized customers. Many of you already think of Esters as a great space to luxuriate in, usually with a bottle of wine and some great food in the evening, but sitting on the patio one beautiful morning we thought, wouldn’t it be a great place to have a lazy brunch! From that, Esters Boozy Brunch was born, with a crave worthy menu of dishes from Chef Chris Ono, including a Breakfast Sandwich with Soft Scrambled Organic Eggs, White Cheddar, Bacon and Smokey Tomato Aioli on Brioche. There’s also French Toast with Crème Anglaise, Seasonal Fruit and Maple Syrup, Tortilla Española with Charred Scallions and Romesco and an awesome House Corned Reuben with Sauerkraut, Raclette and Smoked Tomato. And as the name suggests, there are tons of cocktails and sparkling wine, including what we think is the best Bloody Mary in town.
And for those of you starting to think about delicious and unique holiday gifts, look at the recently revamped Esters Wine Club where you can choose from three levels of wines. Sign up for the club, and every month you’ll get shipped to your home two small production bottles curated by our beloved, and recent Wine Enthusiast nominee for Sommelier of the Year Kathryn Coker, complete with detailed drinking notes and history on the wines.
And Sweet Rose also offers a similar gift option for your favorite ice cream lover. Sweet Rose’s online shop has options from packs of classic or seasonal flavors to ship to anyone across the country. How much fun will they have when they come home and find small batches of happiness waiting for them at their door!
RC FAMILY GIVES BACK
We at the RC Family feel incredibly blessed to be able to do what we love every day and to have such great support from our community. From the beginning, we’ve felt a desire to give back to our community and to those in need as a way of saying thank you. Recently, we’ve really stepped up those efforts.
Last month, Cassia hosted LA Chefs for Human Rights and raised over $140,000 for the Program for Torture Victims, an amazing organization that helps refugees and asylum seekers with services to put their lives together, as well as with legal support for their citizenship process. Our fantastic partner Kim Luu Ng, who is a PTV board member and has done pro-bono legal work for their organization, spearheaded this event last year, and to date, the two events have raised just under $250,000 for a cause that is dear to her heart.
In addition, Zoe spearheaded the recent Bake & Gather movement, a series of bake sales, both in LA and across the country, with the goal of raising money for worthy causes and bringing people together in a time of great national divide. Zoe and our team led two of our own bake sales this year, raising over $18,000 for a host of charities, including Public Counsel and Unicef.
And finally, this year we will soon be sending out an email for our 6th annual RC Family VIP Memberships, where we give lots of gift cards and goodies from our group in support for donations to Upward Bound House, which houses homeless families and helps them get off the streets permanently with a tremendous success rate. To date, we’ve raised over $300,000 for Upward Bound, with a goal of raising another $100,000 this year.
If you’ve supported any of these efforts so far, we say a big thank you, and we encourage you to click on each organization’s website if you want to learn how to help. As always, we thank you so much for your loyal and enthusiastic support of our restaurants and shops, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
